Behind the CCPs: Bonnie McFarlane & Rich Vos

Though they taped their half-hour specials on different nights in August, Comedy Central just couldn't keep the married-with-child comedy sweethearts (if anything but sweet onstage) of Bonnie McFarlane and Rich Vos apart on the night after Valentine's Day. And so it is that their Comedy Central Presents will make two beasts with one back-to-back tonight. Who says Last Comic Standing has no soul? The NBC "reality" comedy competition did help play matchmaker for these two stand-ups, after all. Enough with the metaphors, already.

What you really want to know is this: Bonnie McFarlane was much funnier than I'd seen her in years past. While still capable of delivering punchline groaners to the audience, the new mother opened with plenty of funny baby jokes. And Rich Vos stood near me in the back of the theater, quietly trying to laugh and keep their baby happy in a stroller in the wings. I wrote down the term "soft-shell crab" in my notebook, and months later wonder why (maybe it's in the act?). Here's one thing that won't be in McFarlane's act: Comedy Central producers made her come back onstage after her set to redo one joke's line from, "Do you know what I find to be really queer?" to "really gay?" How many do-overs would they have forced out of Jane Fonda?

Kristin Chenoweth to sing at Academy Awards

The buzz about ABC's Oscar broadcast is starting in earnest, and yesterday it was announced that Kristin Chenoweth, the adorable Olive Snook on Pushing Daisies, has been tapped to sing one of the Academy Award nominated songs, "That's How You Know" from the film Enchanted, according to the Baltimore Sun. Kristin will be joined by Marlon Saunders, who played the Central Park Calypso singer in the movie. By the by, Enchanted's star, Amy Adams, will also be singing on the show. She's doing, "Happy Working Song," another nominated song from the Disney hit. FYI, that's the sing-along tune she did in the film with cockroaches, rats and other happy vermin. You can just imagine Walt Disney spinning in his grave, can't you?

Anyway, aside from being a scene-stealer on Pushing Daisies, Kristin is an award winning Broadway star, having won the Tony in 1999 for her role as Sally in You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. She was also nominated for Wicked, in which she played Glinda, the Good Witch, opposite Idina Menzel, who played the Wicked Witch of the West -- and won the Tony! Then Idina costarred with Amy Adams in Enchanted. Everything's connected in a weird way, isn't it?

Well, you can count on Kristin making the most of her Oscar moment. She has an amazing voice -- which has been showcased on a few episodes of Pushing Daisies, such as "Pigeon" and "Dummy" -- and this song suits her perfectly. The Academy Awards ceremony will air on February 24th.
