Anonymous' Global Scientology protest kicks of in Australia

A GLOBAL day of protest against the Church of Scientology organised by internet group "Anonymous" began today with demonstrations outside the church's Australian offices.
About 150 people gathered at the Church of Scientology building in the Sydney CBD this morning, most of them carrying picket signs and wearing costumes or masks.

At 11am, when the protest was scheduled to start, staff inside the building set up a video camera pointed at the street below and locked the front doors. Two security guards stood outside the building and were later joined by several police officers.

The protestors, who said they had worn masks to remain anonymous and prevent possible legal action or retribution from the church, chanted "Church on the right, cult on the left", "Religion is free" and "We want Xenu".

They also made a reference to Lisa McPherson, the US woman whose death in 1995 while under the care of a branch of the church led to a civil wrongful death lawsuit. Criminal charges filed against the church over Ms McPherson's death were dropped in 2000.

Members of the crowd said they had been told not to use "geek speek" during the protest and to put their message across as clearly as possible. They handed out flyers accusing the church of financially exploiting its followers and suppressing criticism.

Anonymous, a notorious internet group whose membership includes hackers, last month declared "war" on the church and temporarily prevented access to at least one official Scientology website.

In a statement released this afternoon, the Church of Scientology's Oceania branch condemned the actions of Anonymous and described the group as "cyber-terrorists".

"Anonymous is perpetrating religious hate crimes against Churches of Scientology and individual Scientologists for no reason other than religious bigotry," the statement said.

"It is Anonymous that has repeatedly attempted to suppress free speech through illegal assaults on church websites so as to prevent internet users from obtaining information.

"They have also engaged in other harassment including threats of violence in telephone calls, fax transmissions and emails, not to mention the Anonymous mailing of white powder to dozens of our churches."

Anti-Scientology demonstrations in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide were promoted from a blog called "anonaustralia" which offered flyers people could download and print to hand out at the demonstration and suggested attendees wear masks.

Protests in Melbourne and Adelaide were scheduled to begin at 2pm local time.

Doris Duke

MIT and Harvard University researchers have each landed more than $1 million from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation to study the process of energy technology innovation in the United States.

Using a two-year, $1.9 million grant, researchers at the MIT Industrial Performance Center will study incentives, regulations, markets, and public and private institutions that lead to the development, demonstration, adoption and diffusion of new energy technologies.

Down Massachusetts Avenue at Harvard, a research group at the John F. Kennedy School of Government will use a three-year, $1.5 million grant to evaluate U.S. energy R&D practices. The group will also compare U.S. innovation practices with other countries.

The work at both schools is intended to lead to recommendations for improvements to federal and state R&D policies.

The grants are part of the New York-based DDCF’s $100 million Climate Change Initiative, launched last year. The MIT and Harvard awards are two of five new grants — totaling more than $6.6 million over three years — intended to accelerate the development of clean energy technologies. Carnegie Mellon University, Boston-based nonprofit Clean Air Task Force, and the Washington-based Bipartisan Policy Center received the other grants.

Last summer, MIT received a two-year, $500,000 grant from the DDCF. That grant, for MIT’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research funded research and analysis intended to inform U.S. policy decisions on climate change.

The Princess and the Marine

Television movie based on the true story of Meriam Al-Khalifa, a princess from Bahrain, who snuck into the United States illegally after eloping with Jason Johnson, a U.S. Marine, against her family's wishes.

On November 1, 1999, 19-year-old Meriam Al-Khalifa, a member of the Bahraini royal family, sneaked out of her family's mansion to meet her beloved -- 25-year-old U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Jason Johnson. Johnson gave her a forged military I.D. and fake orders along with baggy men's clothing. She hid her long, dark hair under a New York Yankee baseball cap and together the couple boarded a commercial flight to the United States. The lovers, who had met nearly a year before at a Bahrain shopping mall and had exchanged hundreds of love letters and one kiss during their courtship, got as far as Chicago -- where Al-Khalifa was taken into custody and forced to spend three days in jail. She was released after announcing her intention to seek asylum, and the couple quickly eloped to Las Vegas. For helping Al-Khalifa enter the country falsely, Johnson was court-martialed and demoted.
